When a tooth has suffered extensive damage, root canal treatment may be the only solution to save it. Despite its reputation, the process is much more comfortable than many people think and is often compared to having a simple filling. The procedure generally follows several steps to restore the tooth.

Initial Assessment

To begin, your dentist will typically take X-rays to evaluate the damage. Once a diagnosis is made, a local anesthetic is administered to ensure you remain comfortable throughout the procedure.

Removal of Pulp

A rubber dam will be placed around the tooth to keep the area dry and isolated from the rest of the mouth. The dentist will create an opening in the tooth, often with a dental drill, to access the damaged pulp. The pulp, along with any infected material, is then removed, and if there’s an abscess, it will be drained.

Thorough Cleaning and Filling

Once the pulp is removed, the space will be thoroughly cleaned. If needed, the root canal is widened to ensure there’s enough space for the filling. Depending on the severity of the damage, this phase may take multiple visits or can be completed in one. Sometimes a temporary filling is placed to protect the area between visits. If there is an infection, antibiotics may be prescribed.

Sealing the Tooth

The temporary filling will be replaced with a permanent one to fully seal the tooth. This step is essential in preventing future infections. If necessary, a crown will be placed to protect the tooth, as filling the root canal can increase the risk of the tooth breaking.

Crown Placement

To prevent further damage and ensure durability, a crown is placed over the treated tooth. The dentist may need to reduce the tooth size to ensure a proper fit for the crown, which is then secured in place with dental cement.

Aftercare and Recovery

Post-treatment, your tooth should remain intact for many years. In rare cases, the treatment may need to be repeated if there’s a re-infection.
